Boss Tom Turkey Calls
Like several other people recently, I was intrigued by some new calls in the Midwest Turkey Call Supply www.midwestturkeycall.com , catalog. So when an opportunity came by to acquire the call new at a very good price I jumped on it. Midwest had this to say about the new line of calls in their catalog,
"Boss Tom calls are constructed from select walnut. Custom turned pots have a specially designed taper for superior sound. The unique design of the walnut pot, funnels & amplifies the sound to produce realistic yelps, cutts and purrs. A polyurethane finish has been added to preserve the beauty of this soon to be collector call. Each call comes with a specially designed striker that has been matched for the striker surface of that call."
The call I acquired was the Boss Tom slate over glass with a tapered rosewood striker. The call is a very beautiful call with a walnut pot and a 3 1/2" striking surface. The top of the call measures 4" in diameter and tapers down to 3 1/2" on the bottom of the call to match the striking the surface. The striker measures 7 3/8" overall with the bell being 3 1/2" of the total length.
The call has a good feel when you hold it in your hand. The taper of the pot lets the call sit just right on my fingers. The striker is very nice though it took a little bit to get used to it. My other rosewood striker is a good bit heavier then this one and a bit longer. I do like the taper to the striker which fits my hand well.
This call with the rosewood striker gives nice soft yelps, cutts, clucks and purrs with a bit of rasp. With a little pressure the call can really sing loud with a tad of rasp and a very nice two tone yelp. I also ran my favorite strikers over this call for the past week and the more I play around with the call the more I like it. My favorite strikers for this call include, cherry, purple heart, purple heart/osage orange laminated and of course my Mystic Stick. I was really impressed with the cherry striker on this call, beautiful two tone yelps with a hint of rasp that have a good high pitch for locating yet makes very nice soft talk. This call is definitely my loudest slate call by far, when you crank it up, yet when played loud still holds without the distorted sounds from some calls. Overall I am very pleased and this call will find a place in my vest.
